Silicon monoxide (CAS 10097-28-6) is an inorganic material often referred to as SiOx reflecting its variable Si:O ratio. This material has been widely used as a next-generation anode material in lithium-ion batteries, owing to its high theoretical capacity (2615 mAh/g). When combined with carbon materials, silicon monoxide exhibits a sustained capacity of 577.7 mAh/g after 100 cycles at a current density of 1 A/g.
The performance of silicon monoxide can be further improved by forming a composite with ZnS and nitrogen-doped carbon. The resulting ZnS/NC/SiO composite achieves reversible capacity of 748 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A/g. Prelithiation of silicon monoxide can drastically improve the initial Coulombic efficiency from 66.9% to 91.2% in an LFP//SiO cell configuration.
